The Tengkop basket and it's cousin, the Basag (with a pointed cover), come from the area in Palawan that has been continuously inhabited by the Palaweno people and their ancestors since 800 B.C. It represents a long history and tradition of basket making. The Tengkop has been refined to a carefully engineered container. The light bamboo that is selected for this basket is finely skived and woven in various patterns so the result is as pliable a leather. The carefully braced foot and sides allow the weight of the contents to be carried by the sides rather than the bottom of the basket. This classic basket is an excellent example of craft integrity; both carefully conceived and finely implemented to produce a basket of beauty and utility.
