Settling down is a beautiful thing, what with the thrill of building a life-long connection from an unassuming initial spark. It isn’t this fairy tale type of deal where everything just magically falls into place. I’d argue it’s so much better than that.

Marriage is something that blooms when you give it care. Whether it’s from years of shopping around or just an instant sense of familiarity with someone you met online, the effort that goes into this shared experience justifies its own worth. It’s beautiful, even at its simplest or most mundane.

While it’s never a bad day for love, some of the practices that revolve around marriage can be strange though. From throwing rice around and roasts of the bride and groom (not the culinary kind!) to more culture-specific traditions, there are some things that make you step back and ask- why?

One thing I never really got was the idea of June brides. What’s the deal with that?

Quite a bit, actually!

A gift from the gods

This may come as a surprise to some, but the idea of June weddings actually has roots in the pantheon of Roman mythology. Juno, the daughter of Saturn, was the Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth. Well, she also kind of married her dad and stuff, but let’s not go down that rabbit hole right now.

On top of that, another very important word in the matrimonial lexicon also hails from similar origins. The term ‘honeymoon’ could be traced back to the ancient Celts, who celebrated the first moon of the summer solstice in late June.

You could certainly say that there’s a bit of magic to the month of June that’s greater than the sum of these facts. When you marry in June, you’re a bride all your life. Or however that maxim goes. That might not always be the case, there’s something to moments like these that just stick with you.

Now that is a blessing.
